Brain Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know that May is brain cancer awareness month?  Here are a few things about brain cancer that you should know..

  • Brain cancers are the most common cancer for children ages 0-19 yrs.
  • More than 4,600 children this year will be diagnosed with brain cancer this year
  • There are 120 different types of brain tumors
  • About 22,850 adults in the US will be diagnosed in the United States with brain cancer

Signs and Symptoms of Brain cancer:

  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Memory changes
  • Fatigue
  • Personality changes
  • Changes in sensory items (i.e. loss of smell or taste, having a strong sense of smell/taste)
  • Vision changes
  • Loss of balance
  • Difficulty swallowing

If you are concerned about possibly having a brain tumor and you have some of these signs, please notify your doctor and get checked out.

Super Hero Jonah receives a special surprise ..

This little cancer warrior lives in Belgium and is showing off the special surprise that he got from Cards of Hope.  He loves bunnies, so we sent him a bunny hat that was specially made just for him.  It looks like we made another little one super happy.  What do you think?

A cancer warrior going through a care package

This cancer warrior had just gotten home from being in the ER from being sick, when he got a care package.  His mom said that it made him smile and that it was perfect timing because he hadn’t smiled because he had been so sick.  That is what Cards of Hope is all about…bringing happiness, love and hope. Helpful tips if you are experiencing nausea with your cancer treatments

Often times I have people ask me how they can be relieved of their nausea and/or vomiting with their cancer treatments. So here are some tips that will help get you some relief if you are experiencing nausea or vomiting.

1.  Always take the anti nausea medications that your physician has prescribed to you as directed.

2.  Drink a cup of warm peppermint tea.

3.  Try drinking a glass of  ginger-ale.

4.  Try sucking on a piece of hard candy or a lollipop.

5.  Eat some saltines  or dry toast (very slowly) .

6.  Try laying down and resting.

7.  Apply your thumb to your wrist and press for 30 seconds. Your index and middle fingers should be on the top of your wrist.

8.  Put a cool wet washcloth on your face.

9.  Take deep breaths through your nose and out through your mouth.

10. Try positioning a fan so air blows directly on the face.

11.  Put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and sniff slightly.

12. Try eating a small amount of applesauce.

13.  Try slowly eating a ice pop or a popsicle.

14.  Try drinking some warm ginger tea.

15.  Try eating 1-2 peppermint flavored tic tacs.

16.  Eat small meals throughout the day.

17.  Try sucking on ice chips.
